Today we had our parent celebration.  Lots of parents came to hear our poems and watch a slide show with pictures from this school year.  Afterwards we had juice and cookies.  Yum

On Friday I printed a report to see who would be our top reader for the year.  Right now that student is Miriam Velasco with 131 books read and almost 34,000 words.  WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Vladirir Ramirez in spot number 2 has 101 books and almost 24,000 words.   The class has read 872 books and a total of 220,521 words.  I am so impressed!!!!!

Today was the First Grade Spelling Bee.  It was very exciting.. In our class, Leah, Vladimir and Miriam V. were our spelling bee contestants.  At lunch Leah got a HUGE bump on her head and almost did not get to compete.  She was able to stay and hid her bump with her bangs.  There was a "spell-off" for fourth place since three students were eliminated in the same round. Finally we had a fourth place "winner" and were able to spell for the top three spots.  Our spellers Miriam and Vladimir came in second and third place.  We are so proud of them!!!

Today we went to the Ag Fair in Pomona.  We were excited to see if our entries had won any awards.  We were thrilled to see that almost everything we entered  won first place.  Our garden, posters and quilt had beautiful blue ribbons.  Our sawhorse that looked like a head of lettuce won third place.  We had fun looking around and visiting the petting zoo.  Nestle the cow that visited us at Glazier earlier in the month had had her baby, a bull calf named Crunch!

A cow named Nestle visited us today.  She is going to have a baby calf in a couple of weeks.  We learned that a cow has four stomachs and they chew their cud.  We wish we could h

So far this year we have read and passed comprehension tests on 615 books.   The average score has been 90%.  Most students pass on the first try.  If they fail, they read the book over and try again.  They love taking tests on the iPad because they can check their stats when they are done.

Today was Read Across America Day.  Our class participated in Accelerated Reader's "Read the Most from Coast to Coast" promotion.  We had an afternoon read-a-thon.  The students read books and took AR tests.  We had parent volunteers helping struggling readers.  We had students helping other students read and take tests.  We took tests on almost 100 books!!!!!  Wow!  I thought we might pass about 50.  it was so exciting to see how many tests we passed.  Now I get to make almost 100 keys for the wall.  I am sure I will get a cramp in my hand!

We love going to the library.  Miss Marissa in the library helps us find the books we love to read. Here are some books we love.
